A hízott liba- és kacsamáj termelése, valamint piaci kihívásai AgEcon
Kozak, Janos.
A világ májtermelésének növekedése azt jelzi, hogy e különleges termék fogyasztása iránti igény várhatóan hosszabb távon fennmarad. A termelés szerkezetében azonban átrendeződés várható az olcsóbb hízott kacsamáj javára. Ugyanakkor a libamáj a hízottmáj-termékcsoportban csúcsminőség marad. Magyarország, mivel Franciaország után a legnagyobb májtermelő ország, továbbra is mindkét termék előállításában érdekelt lesz. Hazánk már évtizedek óta a világ vezető libamájtermelő országa, de a jövőben új piaci versenytársak (pl. Kína) megjelenésére is számíthat a világ májkereskedelmében. Emellett más országok növekvő kacsamájtermelése is egyre nehezebbé teszi a magyarországi májtermékek külpiaci értékesítését. Mivel a jelenlegi gyakorlattól eltérő módon hízott májat...

A Multicommodity EU Policy Framework Incorporating Public Good Criteria into the Direct Payment System in Agriculture AgEcon
Dunne, W.; O'Connell, J.J..
For decades the CAP has been the major influence in shaping EU agriculture and food production. The economic and policy environment in the EU is now very different from that which prevailed in the earlier decades. The future economic, social and geographic diversity of the EU will be further increased by enlargement. Agricultural policies and the related operational frameworks will inevitably change to accommodate this added diversity and the changing societal and consumer values. This paper evaluates how the current shape of EU agriculture has been influenced by the reforms to date. It also attempts to focus on where EU farming may be, or wish to go, over the next decade. The evaluation is restricted to the beef sector as it has been to the forefront in...

A Multi-Criteria Decision Framework for Animal Welfare Policy AgEcon
Hellstrom, J.; Bicknell, Kathryn.
Policy decisions aimed at improving farm animal welfare involve balancing several competing objectives. Not only do such decisions involve tradeoffs between social, ethical, economic and welfare considerations, animal welfare itself is a multi-dimensional concept and some husbandry practices may satisfy some welfare needs but fail to satisfy others. Multi-criteria decision analysis is a decision theoretic tool that has been used to inform decision making in fields such as environmental policy, urban and regional planning, and biosecurity – all of which are characterised by competing goals and multiple stake-holders. This paper presents a preliminary multi-criteria framework for the analysis of animal welfare policies at the national level using indoor...

A Structural Equation Model of the Factors Influencing British Consumers’ Behaviour towards Animal Welfare AgEcon
Toma, Luiza; McVittie, Alistair; Hubbard, Carmen; Stott, Alistair W..
Results of national and pan-European consumer surveys and the growth in the demand for so-called “animal friendly” food products suggest that consumers within the European Union show a high level of concern for the welfare of farm animals. This paper analyses the determinants of British consumers’ behaviour towards animal welfare using structural equation models (SEM) with observed and latent variables. SEM is a statistical technique for testing and estimating relationships amongst variables, using a combination of statistical data and qualitative causal assumptions. We used a data set collected in 2005 through face-to-face interviews of 654 consumers in England. We analysed the range of statements in existing literature on consumers’ behaviour towards...

Alves, Ana Julia Silva e; Guilloux, Aline Gil Alves; Zetun, Carolina Ballarini; Polo, Gina; Braga, Guilherme Basseto; Panachão, Ligia Issberner; Santos, Oswaldo; Dias, Ricardo Augusto.
The relinquishment of animals is frequent and common throughout all the Latin America, causing losses in the areas of public health, social, ecological, economic and animal welfare. Among the main causes of pet relinquishment are behavioral problems, lack of space in houses, the lifestyle of the owner, lack of information about the owner responsibilities and costs associated with the keeping of animals. The number of laws related to animal welfare has been growing, due to pressure from the civil population but abandoned animals are a problem of responsibility of all the society. The role of the veterinarian is to inform and educate their customers about the topic. Reduce the relinquishment animal is a public challenge with cultural and long-term solution,...

Cecchin,Daiane; Campos,Alessandro T.; Cruz,Vasco F. da; Sousa,Francine A.; Amaral,Pedro I. S.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentration of gases in three swine growing and finishing facilities with different building typologies, regarding floor and dividers. The experiment compared three treatments: pen with water depth, pen with partially slotted floor on the sides, and pen with partially slotted floor on sides and in the center. Measurements of instantaneous concentrations of ammonia (NH3 ppm) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ppm) were taken at animal level. The levels of sound pressure (dB) at animal level and at 1.50 m from the floor were also recorded. It was observed that the pen with water depth was the one with the highest average concentration of NH3. Although there was a significant difference in CO2 concentrations,...

Attitudes of South Brazilian sheep farmers to animal welfare and sentience Ciência Rural
Tamioso,Priscilla Regina; Guimarães,Paulo Ricardo Bittencourt; Molento,Carla Forte Maiolino.
ABSTRACT: We investigated self-reported attitudes of 148 South Brazilian sheep farmers to animal welfare and sentience. Many farmers (73.0%) knew animal welfare superficially. Farmers that worked for longer in the sheep industry and that raised sheep for commercial purposes mentioned more commonly that they had knowledge about animal welfare (P<0.05). Terms related to freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition were the most used to define animal welfare, cited 24.9% of the times. The majority claimed that their animals experience good levels of welfare (93.2%), especially farmers that kept bigger flocks (P<0.05). However, many respondents believed that sheep welfare could be improved on their farms (71.6%), mainly farmers with less experience in...

BEHAVIOR OF BROILERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF LED LIGHTING AND MICROMETEOROLOGICAL ELEMENTS REA
Rodrigues,Tatiana P. N. da S.; Pandorfi,Héliton; Guiselini,Cristiane; Almeida,Gledson L. P. de; Morrill,Waldirene B. B..
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to analyze the differences between the food behaviors observed under the factors of production environment, sex and lighting system, using stochastic tools of multivariate analysis. As for the thermal characteristics of the environment, air temperature (T, °C), enthalpy (H, kJ kg-1), and black globe temperature and humidity index (BGTHI) showed high positive correlation with each other and strong negative correlation with relative humidity (RH, %). The “male drinking” behavior was positively associated with thermal characteristics of the environment in the three periods of the day, that is, the act of drinking more water would be a way to alleviate thermal stress. Birds subjected to red LED showed a strong...
